For me the biggest concerns I have about any new site I make are, will it get traffic and will it earn me any money?
It’s easy to just jump in and hope that everything works out later but I’ve learned the hard way that picking the right part of the market for your website is what makes the difference.

For me finding the niche is a key piece of the puzzle because in the perfect niche market you can be the leader for months (and even years) before facing any serious competition. But what are the features of a niche market that you should look out for?

  • So when I say niche what I often mean is keywords or phrases that people type into Google. For example “Fly fishing vacations in Florida” is a niche but “vacations in Florida” is not. So really I don’t classify anything with over 10,000 searches a month as a niche.

  • A niche is always specific, so people have a very clear idea about what product they are trying to find or what problem they are trying to solve. This is good for you though as it means you can target your advertising and sales much better than a general site. Since you can provide people with exactly what they want your conversion rate will be much higher.

  • It’s easy to find a niche where there is no money involved, yes there might be a few thousand people searching for “cats playing the piano” every month but how exactly do you plan on monetising that traffic? Your visitors should always have money associated with niche you are in, booking a hotel or buying a product are perfect examples of things people expect to pay for.

To me niche marketing is the perfect way for someone new to the online marketing world to get started. You can achieve some modest results in a short period of time just by being the most relevant site out there. The amount of money you can earn will of course vary but in my opinion it’s better to be the big fish in the little pond instead of the minnow in the ocean!
